Well, I didn’t get much sleep on the train last night. One of the other people in our compartment snored so loud that he could literally wake the dead. I mean seriously, how can someone snore that loud and not wake themselves up? Emily was so excited that she couldn’t sleep anyway. She stayed up all night playing on the iPod and looking out the windows.

The train arrived in Kiev at approximately 7:00am. We gathered our belongings and walked to our taxi. Victor took Emily and I to our apartment first. Once there, I finished completing our documents for the US Embassy. Then, Victor took Ray to his apartment. Before leaving for the Embassy, Emily and I both took showers. I showed Emily the new clothes and shoes we brought for her to wear. She was excited and after taking her shower, she put on some of her new clothes.

The appointment at the Embassy went smoothly. I gave them all the necessary documents. They scanned Emily’s fingerprints. Then, embassy employee instructed me to return on Monday at 2:00pm to get Emily’s visa. After the Embassy, we went to the medical center to get a medical exam for Emily. The doctor examined Emily and translated her medical records. He stated that Emily was in good health.

After the medical exam, we ate lunch at TGI Fridays. The food here has been good but it was nice to eat food that I was more familiar with. Ray and I had the Jack Daniels Burger with fries. It was so good. Emily had Buffalo Chicken wings with fries.

Emily and I spent the rest of the afternoon in our apartment. We watched TV and relaxed. At about 6:00pm, we met Ray in independence square. We walked around the mall for a little while then at dinner at an Italian restaurant named Mafia. Again, the food was very good.

Ray returned to his apartment after dinner. His return flight to the United States leaves at 6:30am tomorrow. Emily and I walked back to our apartment. On our way, we stopped by a store and bought some snacks and drinks.

When we returned to the apartment, we watched TV for a little while. Then, we took showers again. Emily was so excited about the opportunity to take two showers in the same day.

Gotcha Day!!

I woke up this morning just before the train reached the station in Donetsk. I slept for about 7 hours. I needed it because I didn’t get much sleep the night before on the bus.

Our first stop after getting off the train was at the social security office to update her records to reflect the changes to her birth certificate. This needed to be done to allow Emily to obtain the standard passport. The clerk in the office told Victor the changes wouldn’t take affect for seven days. Victor told him we needed this sooner so Emily could travel home to the United States. The clerk told him they can expedite it but it would still take several days.

This would have added another week to my stay here in Ukraine. In order to avoid having this happen, I told Victor that I wanted to get one of the old passports that are being phased out. Recently, Ukraine changed its passports. The old passports don’t have the same requirements as the new ones. Another benefit of the old passports is being able to get the passport on the same day you apply for it. The new passport takes about 3-4 days to get back after applying for it. The old passports have an additional fee but I was more than willing to pay it so I could have the passport today.

So we went to the passport office and applied for one of the old passports. One hour later, I had the passport in my hand. It felt so good to have all the documents I needed to get my daughter home. After leaving the passport office, Victor and I returned to the apartment. I stayed at the apartment and packed my belongings while Victor went to the courthouse. Ray and Cari had court today for their adoption of Inna and Rada. I found out later that their court date went well and they were approved to adopt their girls. Now, they have to wait ten days for their court decree. This ten day wait seems to be harder on the children than the parents from what I experienced.

After court, Victor returned to the apartment to pick me up. We went to the orphanage to pick up Emily. When we arrived, Victor and I went to the assistant director’s office and I signed the last few documents to take Emily out of the orphanage. A few minutes later, Emily appeared. She was already packed and ready to go. She looked so beautiful today. She gave me a big hug and said, “I love you.” I told her I loved her too and that I missed her the last two days. Emily told me that she missed me too.

I brought some gifts for Emily to give to the director and assistant director. This excited Emily and she rushed off to give the gifts to them. Then,Emily said goodbye to the staff members who were present. Also, Emily said goodbye to her good friend, Rada. Rada’s dad, Ray, had to say goodbye to his daughter also. He returned to Kiev with us on the train so he could get back to work. His court date was complete, so he could return home.

Laura and I both thought there would be a lot of tears from Emily today. That didn’t happen. I didn’t see any tears. She was all smiles. Emily sat right next to me in the taxi and held my hand as the taxi drove away from the orphanage. She held my hand almost the entire drive to Donetsk.

The joy I felt today was overwhelming. Since the day we met Emily, we dreamed of her being our daughter. Today, it is a reality, one that we embrace with all of our hearts. We will always be there for her and be the loving parents that she so deserves. Some people say Emily is lucky to get adopted and have parents. We think we are lucky to add another wonderful daughter to our family. She will enrich our lives and the lives of our extended family.

Emily’s excitement has been obvious from the moment I arrived at the orphanage. She has smiled non stop. She was so excited that she couldn’t fall asleep on the train tonight. During the few times I was able to get a wireless internet connection, Emily took advantage of the opportunity to text her mom and sisters. She told them that she loved them and that she is on her way home.

Traveling!!

In the last 48 hours, I have traveled 1,362 miles to get a new birth certificate listing us as Emily‘s parents and changing her name from Anna Ravlys to Emily Rebecca Mertes. This was necessary because Emily was born in a different region than the region her orphanage is located. It has been a very challenging trip. Reflecting back on it brings to mind the movie “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.” The only mode of transportation from that movie that I didn’t use was airplane.

Tuesday morning started early at about 7:30. We stopped by the court to pick up the court decrees. I spent the day traveling with the other two families while they got birth certificates and passports for their children. This travel was done by car and van. We were so busy that we didn’t get to eat until 7:00pm.

After these documents were obtained, it was time for all of us to travel to Kiev. The other two families are in their final days here and had embassy appointments to make. I was going to continue traveling to the town Ichnya, Emily’s place of birth. The original plans were to travel to Kiev by train. There wasn’t any room on the train so we had to travel to Kiev by bus. A twelve hour bus ride overnight was difficult to put it mildly. I don’t think anybody slept very much during this trip.

In Kiev, the other families checked into their apartment then headed to the Embassy. I got into a taxi with Anya for another two and half hour ride to Ichnya. Upon our arrival, we located the Records office. We went into the office, showed them our paperwork, and requested the new birth certificate with the appropriate changes. The clerk discovered an error on our court decree. Two numbers were transposed on the court decree number. The clerk refused to issue a new birth certificate with this error. We informed them that we traveled a great distance and can’t repeat the trip. An arrangement was made to have the court correct the document and fax it to their office. Then, Anya signed an affidavit stating that she will bring the corrected original to their office.

After getting the birth certificate, we went to the notary to make copies of it. Then, we had to drive quickly to make it back to Kiev in time for my train back to Donetsk. Our driver made good time on the return trip; however, we nearly collided with a cow that had wandered on to the road. The driver couldn’t swerve because another car was approaching in the oncoming lane. He was able to brake quickly enough to avoid hitting it.

We arrived in Kiev with enough time to catch our train. Due to traffic during rush hour, Victor and I used the subway. This was a new experience for me. I was amazed they could fit so many people on those trains. It didn’t seem safe. We arrived at the train station about an hour before our departure. We took advantage of this time to eat dinner before being stuck on the train for twelve hours without anything to eat.

We boarded the train at about 7:05pm. I used the time before departure to try to text Laura while I still had a wireless internet connection. I was able to text her a few times before the connection was lost.

One more day until I get the court decree!!

Today, Emily had her picture taken for her passport. She got dressed up for this and looked exceptionally beautiful. After having her picture taken, Emily met me for lunch at the pizza restaurant. We had a good time during lunch laughing and telling jokes. Emily also picked up the camera and took pictures again.

After lunch, I went back to the orphanage with Emily. We watched music videos on the computer. I am really happy with the type of music Emily likes. She likes country, rock, and pop music. Taylor Swift is her absolute favorite. She also likes The Fray and Katy Perry. Recently, she has also started liking Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban. She knows her mom really likes Keith Urban.

Later, we went for a walk again. While we were walking, Emily asked more questions about home and her family. I explained to her that she now has a very large extended family that loves her. This pleased Emily very much. She has waited five years for the love of a family and now she has more people who love her than she could have possibly imagined.

While we were walking, we stopped and talked to one of Emily’s teachers. With my limited knowledge of Russian, I was able to understand her telling me that Emily was a very good girl. She said she loved Emily. I could tell she is going to miss Emily very much.

When we returned from our walk, Emily wanted to text her mom and sisters. I tried to connect with text for free but the wireless internet signal was weak so I had difficulty connecting. We were able to connect long enough for Emily to tell her mom that she loves her and misses her. We lost the internet connection while Emily was trying to tell her sisters that she loves them. After that, I wasn’t able to reconnect to the internet.

Saying goodbye tonight was extremely difficult for both Emily and I. The other two children who were adopted the same day as Emily were leaving the orphanage tonight for good with their families. Emily really wanted to leave with me tonight; however, she has to wait until Thursday before I can get her. I have to travel to the region she was born in to get her birth certificate first. This was explained to Emily. She understood but she was still sad.

Before going out to the taxi, Emily turned away from me momentarily so I couldn’t see her wiping tears away from her eyes. Emily has always been concerned for the happiness of her mom and dad. When we were outside by the taxi, Emily wasn’t able to hold back her emotions any longer. She put her arms around me and her head on my shoulder as she cried. I cried as I held her. Then, I said, “I love you” and told her I will be back on Thursday morning to get her. Emily responded with, “I love you too.”

As I got in the taxi, I could see one of the other girls comforting Emily. I was unable to hold back the tears as the taxi drove away. Seeing so much sadness from my daughter hurts my heart.

The wait is almost over!!

The wait is almost over. Today was the tenth day since the court approved our petition to adopt Emily. On Tuesday, I will get the court decree officially making Laura and I the parents of Emily Rebecca Mertes. The gravity of this event has consumed my thoughts the last few days. We will be responsible for providing her with a home, the love of a family, and safety. As her parents, it is also our responsibility to provide her with the confidence and tools necessary to be successful in life and to achieve her dreams. These seem like simple things to provide for a child but they have been missing from Emily’s life up to this point. My heart is deeply touched that Emily trusts us to provide her with these necessities.

We did not start this journey with the intention of saving a child from the uncertain future of aging out of an orphanage. We came to Ukraine because we fell in love with Emily and wanted her to be our daughter. Emily has such a sweet heart and an amazing personality that it is easy to fall in love with her. She charmed everyone in our family. Rachel and Megan fell in love with her and are so excited to have her for a sister. Both of our extended families fell in love with her and are welcoming her into the family with open arms. My mother, my sister, and Laura’s parents helped us make this trip possible. Thank you for taking care of Rachel and Megan while we were gone.

Today’s visit at the orphanage was great. Emily entered the room and gave me a really tight hug. The hug lasted a long time too. She must have hugged me for about 5 minutes. Then, Emily and I went for a walk. The walks are starting to become a habit. It appears to be Emily’s way of dealing with the excitement that she will soon be leaving the orphanage for good. I enjoy these walks with Emily. We talk about home and family. These are two things that Emily is so excited to have now. Again, we stopped in a few shops and I bought her some snacks.

When we returned to the orphanage, Emily practiced the English alphabet with one of the books I bought her yesterday. She already knows many of the letters and enjoyed showing me what she has learned so far. When the time for me to leave arrived, Emily asked if she could keep the book so she could keep working with it. I told her she could keep it.

Emily walked with me to the front door. We hugged, kissed, and said, “I love you.”

Today, I walked to the café with the WiFi before going to the orphanage. Ray and Cari were already there when I arrived. I sat at the table with them and let them use my computer to put pictures on their blog. I tried to put Emily’s video on my facebook page but the internet connection was too slow.

Ray and Cari told me about some books they bought that teach English to Russian speakers. After leaving the café, Ray took me to the store they bought these books from and I also purchased these books. Two of the books teach English words, phrases, and short sentences to Russian speakers phonetically while the other book teaches the English Alphabet to Russian speakers. After buying the books, I hung out with Ray and Cari in their hotel room until the taxi showed up to take us to the orphanage.

Emily gave me a big hug when I arrived at the orphanage. She asked me to go for a walk with her again. I really enjoyed taking a walk with her yesterday so I was thrilled she wanted to do it again. During our walks, we talk about many things. One thing she talked about today was the length of her hair. She was comparing it to the length of her mom’s and sister’s hair. I asked Emily if she wanted long hair and she replied, “Yes” with a big smile on her face.

While we were walking, we stopped at a few stores. At the first store, I bought Emily and I an ice cream sandwich. I also bought Emily a small pizza that she said she would share with her friends later. At another store, Emily bought a bottle of fingernail polish and sunflower seeds.

After taking a few pictures, we returned to the orphanage for the rest of our visit.  I showed Emily the books I bought for her.  She was very excited about these books and immediately opened them and started reading them.  In less than one minute, Emily was saying new words in English.  Then, she started saying phrases and short sentences in English.  Words can't describe how excited I was to witness my daughter as she learned new words in English.

Everyday, Emily tells me she misses and loves her mom and sisters. When the time to leave arrived, Emily helped me gather my things and walked me out to the taxi. We hugged and kissed. Then we said, “I love you” to each other.

Emily is one day closer to leaving the orphanage and coming home to a large family that loves her dearly.

All I did today was sit around the apartment until the time to go to the orphanage arrived. I had planned to go to the café with WiFi so I could send Laura the video Emily made for her. I ended up not doing this because all I had on me was US Dollars which I can’t spend here. Later, I was able to exchange some US Currency on my way to the orphanage.

Today’s visit to the orphanage started out great. Emily hugged me and sat in the chair next to me. Then, she asked how her sister and mom were doing. I told her they were doing good and that they miss her. I told her that her mom was working and her sisters were probably still asleep.

Then, the subject changed to Emily’s school at the orphanage. Emily stated that she only has one day of school left at the orphanage. I corrected her and informed her that she has three days of school at the orphanage. Emily was really unhappy with this. The other two children who were adopted on the same day as her are leaving the orphanage on Tuesday. I told Emily that she will not be able to leave until Thursday because I have to travel to the region she was born in to get her new birth certificate first. I can not get the new birth certificate until I get the court decree on Tuesday.

I must have eaten something spoiled for lunch because I became sick while at the orphanage. I had to run outside several times to throw up. After throwing up for about the fifth time and all the food was out of my stomach, I started to feel better.

Emily was back to her usual happy self again. She asked me to go for a walk with her. It was nice because we left the orphanage grounds and walked around the neighborhood around the orphanage. During the walk, Emily held my hand and talked about her mom and sisters. She repeatedly expressed her excitement about coming home to live with her new family. Emily asked if the weather at home was similar to Ukraine. I told her yes. Then, Emily asked if her mom was cold at home. She is always concerned for the well being of her family.

During our walk, Emily took me inside a small store. I told her she could by something to snack on. She picked out a bag of bacon flavored potato chips. Meat flavored potato chips are a favorite here in Ukraine. Then, we stopped by a Soviet Era World War 2 memorial and took some pictures. At the end of our walk, Emily told me that she loves me, her mom, Rachel, Megan, and the rest of her extended family.

We went back inside the orphanage and watched a movie until the time to leave arrived. Then, Emily helped me gather my things and walked me out to the van. Emily kissed me three times and said, “I love you.” I told her, “I love you” and hugged her.

Today was Friday. Emily told me that she gets to take a shower on Friday nights. She told me that she doesn’t get to use shampoo though. She has expressed excitement about getting to take a shower everyday again like she did this past summer when she lived with us for three weeks. And from her comments, it sounds like she can’t wait to use shampoo again.

Very soon, Emily’s dream will come true when I take her away from the orphanage for good. I know she is eagerly anticipating this moment. She is ready to come home and start her life in our family.
It has been eight days since Laura returned home.  I am enjoying the time I spend with Emily but I also miss Laura, Rachel, and Megan.  Soon, Emily and I will be home with them and we will be together as a family.

I did absolutely nothing today before going to the orphanage. I sat around watching some TV and playing on the computer. Because I let Emily keep my iPod to work on her English, I didn’t even have music to listen to.

Again, Emily was the first child in the room when I arrived. She walked right up to me and embraced me in a tight hug. Then, Emily told me she misses her mom. She cried and laid her head on my shoulder as I held her.

As has been the pattern the last several days, the first thing Emily wanted to do was to text her mom. She wanted to tell her she loved her and that she missed her. Emily needed no help with typing “I love You.” She knows this English phrase already. With all the other messages, I just told Emily what letter to type and let her type the messages herself. The educational apps Emily has been playing on the iPod have been effective. When I told her the letters to type, most of the time she knew which ones they were.

Then, Emily wanted to text her sisters. I told her they were still asleep. So, we would have to text them another time. Then, she wanted to text her Aunt Jeannette and her Grandma. Emily texted back and forth with Jeannette for a little while but her Grandma was still asleep. Emily is so excited about her new family. She asks me about everyone. Soon, she will be home with a large extended family who loves her dearly. She is such an amazing young lady and she deserves all the love she gets.

Emily’s excitement about going home is similar to the excitement she experienced just before court. She can barely contain her excitement. She expected to leave the orphanage on Sunday because that is the tenth day after our court date. I explained to her that it would actually be Tuesday before would have the court decree. Then, I told her that it would probably be another two days before I could get her because Victor and I have to travel to the region she was born in to get her birth certificate. Emily acknowledged me but she wasn’t happy about it. She showed her displeasure with just a mild frown.

Emily, Masha, and Vanya performed on the stage for the parents again while I took pictures. Then, Emily asked if someone could record her performing for her family in the Unites States. One of the other parents had a camera with video recording capability and they recorded it. As soon as she was done, Emily asked me to send the video to her mom. Emily also asked if I could put the video on the internet so everyone at home could see it. The internet connection with my wireless modem was too slow so I told her I would do it later.

Emily and I finished the visit watching a movie on the computer. When the time to leave arrived, Emily helped me gather my things and she walked me out to the van. Emily and I hugged, kissed, and said “I love you.”

Missing her mom and sisters!!

The first thing Emily wanted to do today was to text her mom on the text for free website. Emily has been practicing English and the Alphabet on my iPod and she was enjoying showing off her new skills. She did all they typing with a little help from me.

Emily texted Laura that she missed her and loved her. Laura responded that she loves her and misses her too. Seeing Laura’s responses brought a smile to Emily’s face. Emily also asked her mom to tell Rachel and Megan that she loves them and misses them too.

After texting her mom, Emily and I watched a movie on the computer and took a few pictures.

Half way through the wait!! Well, kind of.

It rained most of the day today so I decided to stay in the apartment until it was time to go to the orphanage.  I passed the time by cleaning the apartment and doing laundry.

Today is the fifth day of the ten day wait for the court decree.  Technically, we are halfway through the wait already; however, it is not that simple.  You wait ten days then get the court decree on the eleventh day.  If the tenth day is on a Sunday, as it is for us, then you have to wait until Tuesday to get the court decree.  So, this makes our wait twelve days actually.

Emily has been counting the days until she leaves the orphanage for good.  She expects to leave on Sunday.  Victor suggested that I leave her there for a few extra days while we travel to get her birth certificate.  She was born in a different region than the one her orphanage is located in.  I explained to Emily that she will be there for a few extra days while I complete this task.  She wasn’t very happy about this but handled it well.  She counted the days on the calendar again and pointed to the day she thought she was leaving.  I tried to explain it to her but there wasn’t anyone available at the time to translate.  I will talk to Victor again about this and decide what to do and he will translate it to Emily.

I am glad I stayed for the ten day waiting period for several reasons.  First, Emily has missed her mom very much since she returned home.  Laura had to return home for several reasons even though she would have rather stayed.  Emily understands why her mom left but she still misses her.  Having me here has helped her cope with missing her mom.  Second, the other two families who adopted on the same day as us stayed for the ten day wait.  I didn’t want Emily to see the other two children having visits with their families during the ten day wait while no one came to see her.

Today, Emily had another gift for me when she entered the room.  It was book of drawing paper.  On the pages inside she attached pictures.  A few of the pictures included her friends Rada and Masha.  The rest of the pictures were of Emily, Laura, and I.  Emily drew pictures on the pages around the photos.  She also wrote “I Love You” on each of the pages.  I will treasure this gift forever.

Emily was excited to show off the English skills she learned while playing the apps on my iPod.  She spent a lot of time working on the alphabet apps.  She also learned some new words in English.  It is encouraging to see her enthusiasm to learn English.  Emily is always talking and telling jokes.  We are eagerly anticipating when she is able to do this in English.

Much of our time today was spent trying to connect to the internet with the wireless modem.  Emily wanted to text online with her mom.  She wanted to text her sisters too but she knew they were in school.  The signal wasn’t very good at the orphanage today so I wasn’t able to connect with the text for free website.  Emily was very disappointed.  She wanted me to keep trying so I did several more times but was unsuccessful.

When the time to leave arrived, Emily helped me gather my things and walked me out to the van.  As we said goodbye, Emily made a kissing gesture to indicate to me that she wanted a kiss.  I kissed her and told her, “I love you.”  Emily replied, “I love you.”  We hugged several more times then I got in the van and we drove off.

Today, I walked to a café that had WiFi.  I was there for a few hours downloading apps to my iPod.  These were educational apps that teach basic English and the alphabet to non English speaking people.  Emily is eager to learn more English and I hope these apps will help her.

When I arrived at the orphanage today, Emily had a gift for me.  It was a stuffed animal.  She wanted me to have it and asked me to sleep with it.  I told her thank you and hugged her.

We were in the room the orphanage uses for performances.  Emily, Rada, and Masha went on stage to perform for the parents.  We could hear them behind the curtains planning their performance.  It mostly sounded like a lot of giggling.  Then, they came out dancing a singing the song from Madagascar , “I like to move it, move it.” I was very funny.  Then, they went back behind the curtain and Emily came back out more serious the second time and danced for us.

After that, Emily sat with me and looked at pictures on the camera.  Then, I logged onto facebook and showed her the video that Laura, Rachel, and Megan made for her.  Emily really enjoyed the video and laughed a lot.

We used text for free to send text messages to Laura.  Emily wanted to type the messages to her mom.  She
told her that she misses her and her sisters and that she loves them.  Emily enjoyed doing this and reading her mom’s responses.

Emily used the rest of our time together playing the educational apps on my iPod.  I was encouraged by the fact that she really enjoyed playing these apps and she was learning the content of the apps quickly.  I let her keep the iPod tonight so she could keep playing the new apps.  I told her I wanted to hear the new words she learns in English when I return tomorrow.  She said OK.

When the time arrived to leave, Emily helped me gather my things and walked me out to the van.  We hugged and said goodbye.

I want to say one more thing.  Today, my thoughts were with Dan Wheldon and his family.  Dan was a great Indy Car driver.  He was one of my favorite drivers and I was excited when he won the Indy 500 this year.  Rest in Peace Dan. You will be missed dearly.

3rd day of the wait!!

Today, I walked to the center of town. It took me about 40 minutes to walk there. While there, I spent about an hour walking around the open air market looking for something for Emily. I couldn’t find anything I thought she would like so I walked back to the apartment. On my way back, I stopped at the supermarket and bought Emily drawing paper and markers.

When I arrived at the orphanage, Emily was the first child in the room. She gave me a big hug and we sat on the couch. I gave Emily the markers and paper. She smiled and said thank you. Emily is a very talented artist. Many of the children in the orphanage are good artists. From what I can tell, they spend much time doing arts and crafts.

Emily still had a cold and was coughing. Her sinuses also seemed to be bothering her. I brought cold medicine with me today and gave her some. I also brought Flinstone’s Vitamins with me. Emily was excited about the vitamins. She ate one then gave one to Masha, Rada, and Vanya.

We sat on the couch watching a movie on the computer again. After that, we played cards. Later, I explained to her that she would get her own iPod Touch if she works hard at learning English. This excited Emily and she said she would work hard to learn English.

Emily is showing more interest in what is happening back home in Indiana. Today, she asked about her mom again. I told her that her mom loves her and misses her. I could tell by the expression on Emily’s face that she misses her mom very much.

She also asked about her sisters, Rachel and Megan. She asked if they were sleeping at that exact moment. I looked at the time and told her probably not. Then, she asked if they were at school. I told her no and she realized that it wasn’t a school day before I could tell her that.

When the time arrived to leave, Emily helped me gather my things and walked me out to the van. Emily got into the van. She was acting like she was going to leave with us. I told her soon and she said “Yes.” Emily and I hugged and said “I love you” to each other. I told her I would see her tomorrow.

I had absolutely nothing to do today before going to the orphanage. I sat on the bed listening to my iPod all day and looking at pictures on the computer.

The weather was much cooler yesterday and today so I spent time with Emily inside today. Ukraine has not turned on the gas for heat yet so it was cold in the orphanage. Emily had a slight cold today. She was coughing and her sinuses were bothering her.

She spent most of the time snuggling up to me on the couch watching a movie on the computer. I put my sweatshirt on her to keep her warm. Emily accepted this gesture which was unusual for her. She normally would want me to keep it so I would stay warm.

When the time to leave arrived, Emily walked me out to the van. We hugged and said “I love you” to each other. I told her I would bring medicine for her tomorrow.

The waiting period begins!!

Today, I cleaned the apartment to pass the time until I went to the orphanage. My apartment is outside the center of town so there isn’t much to do near here. It is about a 20 minute walk to the nearest supermarket and I have walked there a few times. There are more shops and restaurants a little farther away. I haven’t made the walk that far yet. I might do that one day.

I have watched a lot of soccer since arriving in Ukraine. At least with soccer, you don’t have to understand what the announcers are saying. I have also watched a lot of Animal Planet.

When I left for the orphanage today, the weather was nice. I wore shorts and a T-shirt. I would end up regretting that decision later as the temperature dropped considerably by the time I left the orphanage.

Today was my first time going to the orphanage without Laura. Emily missed her mom very much and was sad she wasn’t there; however, she understands her mom had to return home to get back to work. I told her that mom said she misses her and loves her. This cheered her up. She asked me if her mom was on the plane today. I said no and explained that her mom was at the US Embassy completing paperwork. Emily replied, “OK”, like she knows the whole adoption process. She really is a smart young lady. Then, Emily went around the room explaining to everyone what her mom was doing.

We spent today inside with our children. Emily and I played cards, played on the computer, and took pictures. I also spent time teaching Emily some English while she taught me some Russian.

Today, was a special day for one of Emily’s close friends. Rada was told that Ray and Carrie want to adopt her. This made Emily very happy. Emily, Rada, and Masha are very close friends and now all three of them are getting adopted.

Now that we have had court, Emily’s excitement has shifted to the day she leaves the orphanage for good. Today she started the countdown until she leaves. It brings me so much joy to see my daughter’s excitement about starting her life in our family.

It was cold outside when the time to leave arrived. I was very cold due to my choice of clothes for the day. Emily was concerned for me. She asked Anya to tell me to get in one of the cars so I could stay warm. Emily and I hugged several times and told each other, “I love you.”

Today, the court approved our petition to adopt Anna Ravlys and also to change her name to Emily Rebecca Mertes. For days tie for the best day of my life; the day I got married, the day my daughter Rachel was born, the day my other daughter Megan was born, and the day Emily Rebecca became my daughter.
We started our day early. Victor took us to the notary to get a document notarized. We also stopped by a photo store to get some pictures of Emily printed for court. After completing these items, we ate pizza for lunch. The pizza restaurant in this town is very good. After eating, we returned to our apartment to get ready for court.
We left for court at about 2:15pm and our appointment for court was at 3:30pm. When we arrived, Emily was already there and she came outside to meet us. She looked exceptionally beautiful today in her dress. She gave us both big hugs and said “I love you.” Before entering the building, we took some pictures.
We went inside and waited in the hallway outside our courtroom. Emily sat between Laura and I and was being very affectionate toward us. It was explained to Emily that Laura had to return home after court so she could get back to work. We could see the sadness in her face when she heard this but she understood. It didn’t get her down for very long, her excitement for what was about to happen took over and she was smiling again.
At about 3:10pm, we were called into the courtroom. The judge was a very nice man who was a military veteran. Also, before becoming a judge, he had a successful career as a police officer. During the hearing, the judge explained the procedures of the court and our rights. He reviewed our documents and asked us a several questions. He also asked for the recommendations of the Children’s Services inspector and the Uglegorsk Orphanage inspector. Both of them recommended the court approve the adoption petition.
When the judge had all the information he needed, he stated that he and his court officers would deliberate for approximately 20 minutes to make their decision. I looked at Emily and I could see she was slightly concerned. During the deliberation, the prosecutor asked why we wanted to adopt Emily. We showed her pictures of Emily’s visit with us this past summer and explained to her how much we loved her and that our extended families loved her also. The prosecutor was impressed with our answers.
The judge returned and announced his decision. As decision was announced that the petition to adopt was approved, I looked at Emily and saw the biggest smile on her face. She was so happy to become our daughter. As a matter a fact, Emily could barely contain her excitement for the last 3 or 4 days. The people in the courtroom were so happy for Emily that several of them were nearly brought to tears. Laura and I embraced Emily. Emily hugged us back, kissed us, and told “I love you.”
Before the judge left the courtroom, I asked to present him with something. I told him I informed that he used to be a police officer. I told him of the tradition in the United States of police officers trading law enforcement academy class coins with other officers. I told him I would be honored to present him with two coins from my academy class. He appreciated the gesture very much. He told me he would like to take me out shooting sometime before I leave but his schedule doesn’t afford him the time. I told him I would enjoy doing this with him.
After leaving the courtroom, we waited in the hall for Paul and Holly to have their hearing to adopt Masha. They had the same judge as we did. When their hearing was over, we met in the lobby and Victor said we were all going to dinner together. I asked him if that included the children. Victor said yes. Laura and I were so happy that Emily was going to have dinner with us. Up until today, all of our interaction with Emily was at the orphanage.
Before we left, the judge came into the lobby to talk to me more. He presented me with a gift in return. The gift was a plaque of Saint Christopher. I thanked him. We then spent some time talking about our experiences as a police officer. He told me about a famous case he had where he caught a cannibal. He said the suspect was cooking the flesh of one of his victims when he came to arrest him. I took advantage of this moment to interject some humor between him and I. I asked him if it tasted like chicken. He liked this joke very much. He wished me luck and health in life and career. I thanked him for helping make my dream come true with our adoption of Emily.
For dinner, we went to a pizza restaurant. Emily was very hungry and she ate well. The interaction we had with her for dinner was precious. She truly is an amazing young lady and so easy to love. Much of dinner was spent listening to her make jokes and laugh. After eating, she picked up the camera and took more pictures. I asked her if she wanted dessert but she didn’t. She asked for ham flavored potato chips. They didn’t sell any there so I took her to the market next door. She also got me to give in to buying her a bag of sunflower seeds also.
When the time to say goodbye arrived, Emily gave us multiple hugs and kisses. She also said “I love you” several more times. Over the last 3 or 4 days, the hugs , kisses, and “I love you” has become more frequent. Words can’t describe how great it is to add a daughter to our family who loves us so much. Laura received extra affection from Emily during the goodbyes. She knows her mom has to go home and she will miss her. Laura reassured her they will be together again really soon.
Today was tied for the best day of my life.

Nice weather has returned.

After having cold, rainy weather yesterday, the weather was very nice today.  We spent our entire visit with Emily outside. 

We did a little bit of everything with Emily today.  We played cards, watched a movie on the computer, passed a football around, and kicked a soccer ball to each other.  I also practiced speaking Russian with Emily.  Then, Emily used the camera to take more pictures.

Emily posed for many pictures by herself today.  She is a beautiful young lady.  It is so much fun to take pictures of her.  She grew tired of it after a while so I decided to put the camera away.

Emily talked with us again about court.  We told her that she will be our daughter the day after tomorrow.  This brought a big smile to Emily's face and she excitedly repeated what we said to her.

I want to update a few things we posted earlier.  First, the breaking of the family didn't go as easily as we thought but luckily it was worked out.  Second, Ray and Carrie are going to adopt Rada.  Rada is a close friend of Emily's.  We are happy that both of Emily's closest friends are getting adopted.

Well, our run of good weather came to an end today.  Today, it was raining and the temperature was considerably colder. 

We had our typical long wait until it was time to go to the orphanage.  We didn't have much to do to pass the time.  We watched TV and ate lunch.  After lunch, we walked to the market down the street to buy a few items we needed.  While there, I bought some more treats for the children.

We spent time inside with Emily today due to the weather.  It was nice to have some time alone with just her.  When we are outside, much of our attention gets distracted by all the other children.  It is nice to spend time with the other children too but most of our time the last 3 or 4 days was spent outside with all the children.  We really enjoyed the individual attention we had with Emily today.

When we arrived, the children for the other families came in the room.  It was a little while later before Emily arrived.  I asked where Emily was and I was told she was busy.  We weren't told the exact reason because it was a surprise.  When Emily came in the room, she handed us two pictures she drew for us.  She was still working on them when we arrived.  The pictures were of Hello Kitty.  The drawings were very good.

After hugging and saying hello, we sat on the couch and Emily looked at a magazine we brought for her to look at.  Then I handed Emily the treats I bought for everyone.  Emily passed them out to everyone.  She gets so much joy from sharing with others.

After passing out the treats, we watched a movie on the computer with Emily.  She picked Dickie Roberts.  She really enjoyed this movie and laughed a lot.

Emily can barely contain her excitement about being adopted.  Today, I told her it was 3 days until court.  She said no, it was 2 days until court.  Then, she counted Tuesday and Wednesday.  She said Thursday doesn't count because court is actually on that day.  I saw Emily telling some of the other children that she gets adopted in 2 days.  Seeing Emily's excitement about getting adopted brings us so much joy.

When the time to leave arrived, Emily helped us gather our belongings like she does everyday.  She walked out to the van with us.  She told us "I love you" before we could say it to her.  As we hugged her, we told her "I love you too." She responded by saying "I love you" several more times.

Today was a good day.
